This is a fun, quick introduction to what light is and where it comes from. It is an interactive site where you need to circle items that make light.

This site has 3 experiments that work because you can bend light- raising a coin, bending a pencil, bending a beam in the dark. It explains why light bends and makes us see things differently.

This is site that explains simply how mirrors work by using interactive diagrams where you have to predict angles of light. There are some questions at the end to test your understanding.

This is a diagram that moves to explain how plants use light and water to grow. This is called photosynthesis.

This is an entertaining 6 minute You Tube clip about how light is split into a spectrum of colours and why we see things as being a certain colour. There are experiments to explain splitting, reflecting and absorbing light. He moves and talks quickly so you may need to watch it more than once!

Follow this link to find lots of information about lighthouses, like the one at nearby Cape Schanck. Scroll down and click on the link to The Fresnel Lens. This will open to a power point presentation about how this lens works so that light can shine a long way out from a lighthouse in one direction. It mentions characters from a book that we are not reading but it is an excellent explanation about the Fresnel lens with good pictures and photographs.

This clip is from BBC Earth, narrated by David Attenborough. In our Port Phillip Bay there are some fish who live with no sunlight. Some of these creatures can make parts of their bodies glow. This is called bioluminescence. This 2 minute video clip is about fish in other waters who can also make their bodies glow.

This takes you to a map of the world and shows you where night and day is. If you move the cursor at the top of the map, you can see how different parts are in light, whilst others are in shadow, depending on the time you move it to.

This is a search engine for young people. Light comes under ‘Science’. In the Dewey decimal system it is 535. You should look for a reading level of 0 or 3. There are video links, biographies, websites and pictures about what light can do.
